Brené Brown states that being authentic is “the choice to let our true selves be seen”. I do believe the choice to live an authentic life is connected to our ability to be self-aware. It is a daily practice of choosing to show up as our true selves in a culture that does not always encourage this. I have not always been in a place of wanting to be present, aware. There was a time in my life when I was emotionally running from being connected to my feelings. As I imagine is true for most in this state, it is a fear of uncovering something or someone less than perfect. There is tremendous freedom in letting go of that need for perfection and coming to value all aspects of our personality. I am a strong willed woman that is passionate about my purpose. For the most part this serves me well. However, I have come to also appreciate the fact that these traits generate a great deal of impatience at times. While I do work on being more patient I am not always successful; yet, I have come to value that aspect of me, understanding it is part of the whole package. Learning to embrace the good with the not so good is a consistent practice of grace and compassion, not only in me but also in others. Knowing and understanding ourselves, and giving permission to live out our lives in a wholehearted manner is a true gift we can give ourselves, and those we lead and love. Brené Brown also writes that “‘staying real’ is one of the most courageous battles we will ever fight”. Will you join me in the battle?
